How to Use BackTrack 3 with SpoonWPA to Crack Wi-Fi Passwords
BackTrack is a Linux-based operating system that was designed for security testing and penetration testing. It contains a collection of tools and utilities for hacking, cracking, and exploiting various systems and networks. One of the tools included in BackTrack is SpoonWPA, which is a graphical interface for aircrack-ng, a suite of tools for cracking wireless network encryption.
In this article, we will show you how to use BackTrack 3 with SpoonWPA to crack Wi-Fi passwords. This method works for WEP and WPA/WPA2 encryption, but it requires that you have a compatible wireless card and that you are within range of the target network. You will also need a CD or USB drive with BackTrack 3 ISO image[^1^] [^2^] and a blank CD or USB drive to boot from.
Step 1: Download and Burn BackTrack 3 ISO Image
The first step is to download the BackTrack 3 ISO image from the official website[^3^]. There are two versions available: one for GNOME and one for KDE desktop environment. You can choose either one depending on your preference. The ISO image is about 700 MB in size, so it may take some time to download depending on your internet speed.
Once you have downloaded the ISO image, you need to burn it to a CD or USB drive using a software like ImgBurn or Rufus. Make sure you select the correct device and the option to write the image in raw mode. This will create a bootable CD or USB drive with BackTrack 3 on it.
Step 2: Boot from BackTrack 3 CD or USB Drive
The next step is to boot your computer from the BackTrack 3 CD or USB drive. To do this, you may need to change the boot order in your BIOS settings or press a key like F12 or Esc during startup to access the boot menu. Once you see the BackTrack 3 splash screen, you can choose to start the graphical mode or the text mode. We recommend choosing the graphical mode for easier navigation.
After a few seconds, you will see the BackTrack 3 desktop with various icons and menus. You can explore the different tools and applications available in BackTrack 3, but for this tutorial, we will focus on SpoonWPA.
Step 3: Launch SpoonWPA
To launch SpoonWPA, you need to open a terminal window and type the following command:
spoonwpa
This will open a new window with SpoonWPA interface. You will see four tabs: Scan, Capture, Crack, and Config. We will go through each tab one by one.
Step 4: Scan for Wireless Networks
The first tab is Scan, which allows you to scan for wireless networks in your vicinity. You need to select your wireless card from the drop-down menu at the top left corner. If you don't see your wireless card listed, you may need to install the drivers for it using another tool like Ndiswrapper or Madwifi.
Once you have selected your wireless card, click on the Start button at the bottom right corner. This will initiate a scan for wireless networks and display them in a table below. You will see information such as SSID (network name), BSSID (MAC address), Channel, Encryption (WEP or WPA), Signal Strength, and Clients (number of devices connected).
You can sort the table by clicking on any column header. You can also filter the table by typing keywords in the Filter box at the top right corner. For example, if you want to see only WPA networks, you can type WPA in the Filter box.
You can also double-click on any network row to see more details about it, such as ESSID (extended network name), Mode (ad-hoc or infrastructure), Frequency, Quality, Authentication (open or shared), Key Index (for WEP), and Cipher (for WPA).
For this tutorial, we will assume that you have found a WPA network that you want to crack. Note down its BSSID and Channel number as we will need them later.
